Quick answer: The Ayangbah Foundation offers customer service training for employees at retail, restaurant, hotel and tourism businesses across San Bernardino County. We help employers develop shift leads, improve guest service, prepare seasonal staff, and build communication skills through our Public Speaking Lab and Conversational Mandarin course. Classes run live online or in downtown San Bernardino.
In retail and hospitality, your front line is your brand. A guest remembers the cashier who solved a problem, the hotel clerk who stayed calm during a rush, or the shift lead who handled a complaint with grace. Those moments aren't luck. They come from people who have been trained to handle them.
Why Customer Service Training for Employees Matters in Our Communities
San Bernardino County's retail and visitor economy looks different in every town.
- Highland: a Costco warehouse of about 161,000 square feet opened in March 2025 near Greenspot Road, joining Lowe's, Stater Bros., Grocery Outlet, In-N-Out and Starbucks. A Tractor Supply store opened in the Town Center area in May 2025 (City of Highland ACFR, FY 2024–25).
- Montclair: Montclair Place, which opened in 1968 as Montclair Plaza, has long anchored the city's retail economy (City of Montclair). About 57.9% of residents speak a language other than English at home (U.S. Census QuickFacts).
- Big Bear Lake: the City calls its economy "primarily tourism-driven." The year-round population of about 5,000 can grow to 20,000 to 100,000 people on weekends and holidays, and restaurants and hotels produce nearly a third of the city's sales tax (City of Big Bear Lake ACFR, FY 2024–25).
- Yucca Valley: Joshua Tree National Park borders the town to the south, and State Route 62 carries visitors through the Morongo Basin (Wikipedia).
- Needles: a historic Route 66 stop and the eastern gateway to the Mojave National Preserve, with tourism as one of its two economic pillars alongside BNSF Railway (Wikipedia).
- Ontario: home to Ontario International Airport, The Home Depot and QVC among its top ten employers (City of Ontario 2023 ACFR). More than half of residents, 55.1%, speak a language other than English at home (U.S. Census QuickFacts).
Whether your guests are local families, weekend skiers or international travelers, the skills they notice are the same: courtesy, clear communication and quick problem solving.
Developing Shift Leads Who Can Run the Floor
Your best cashier or server isn't automatically ready to lead a shift. Leads need to assign tasks, coach new hires, handle complaints, count a drawer and report to a manager. Our training builds those skills:
- Career Readiness & Entrepreneurship Employment Training (40 hours, 4 weeks, $1,200): professionalism, teamwork, time management and problem solving, with a certificate.
- Microsoft Excel & Office Essentials (12 hours, $297): schedules, inventory counts, sales reports and clean email communication.
- Public Speaking & Communication Lab: leading a pre-shift huddle, giving clear instructions and handling difficult conversations.

Preparing Seasonal Staff Fast
Mountain and desert tourism businesses hire in waves. Ski season, summer lake traffic and holiday weekends in Big Bear Lake, and park visitors in Yucca Valley, all bring sudden staffing needs. Seasonal workers need to learn your standards quickly. Our pre-employment and job readiness training prepares candidates before they start: workplace expectations, customer service basics and reliability. Because every class is offered live online with day, evening and Saturday sessions, people in remote towns like Needles or Big Bear Lake can train without a long drive.
Mandarin for Customer-Facing Teams
Our eight-week Conversational Mandarin Chinese course ($297) helps customer-facing staff greet guests, answer simple questions and show respect in one of the world's most widely spoken languages. It won't make anyone fluent in eight weeks, but it gives staff useful everyday phrases and cultural awareness. It can be a good fit for teams that serve travelers, shoppers or business visitors who speak Mandarin.
Customer Service Training for Employees Can Help Retention
Hospitality and retail have a reputation for high turnover. Training shows employees there's a path forward, from associate to lead to supervisor. That alone can change how people feel about their job. We won't promise a specific result, but our article on reducing employee turnover through training explains why it often helps.
We also work with second-chance and reentry participants who are ready to work, and we are an approved work-experience worksite for the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Department, with 10 interns hosted and mentored so far. Some employers and workers may be eligible for public training funds, but eligibility varies and nothing is guaranteed.
ServSafe and CPR/First Aid certifications are planned for 2027 and are not yet available. Employers can join our interest list.
