Forklift Certification: What It Is and How to Get One

Forklift certification means you have completed forklift safety training and passed a hands-on evaluation showing you can operate the equipment safely. Many warehouse and logistics jobs ask for it. Our Forklift Operator course is launching in 2027, taught by certified partner instructors; interest list open now, and you can build job-ready skills with our Career Readiness class today.

If you are looking at warehouse work, forklift skills can make your application stand out.

What forklift certification actually is

Forklifts are powerful machines, and accidents can be serious. Federal workplace safety rules require employers to make sure forklift operators are trained and evaluated before they drive on the job. That is what people mean by forklift certification.

Training usually has two parts:

  • Classroom learning: how forklifts work, load limits, stability, safe driving and inspections.
  • Hands-on practice and evaluation: driving, lifting and placing loads while a qualified trainer watches.

Keep in mind that employers often evaluate new operators on their own equipment, even if you already have a certificate. Prior training still shows you are serious and ready to learn fast.

Who needs forklift certification

  • Warehouse associates and material handlers
  • Shipping and receiving clerks
  • Distribution center and logistics workers
  • Retail and home improvement stockroom staff
  • Construction and manufacturing workers who move materials
