CompTIA A+ vs Google IT Support Certificate: Which Should You Get First?

If you are brand new to IT, the Google IT Support Certificate is often an easier first step because it is beginner-friendly and broad. If you want a widely recognized industry exam for help desk and technician roles, CompTIA A+ is a strong choice. Many people do both. Our CompTIA A+ and Google Career Certificates training is launching in 2027, taught by certified partner instructors; interest list open now, and our Microsoft Excel & Office Essentials class is open now.

Here is a plain comparison to help you decide.

What CompTIA A+ is

CompTIA A+ is a vendor-neutral IT certification focused on hands-on technical support. It covers hardware, operating systems, networking basics, security basics and troubleshooting. You earn it by passing exams.

  • Well known among employers hiring help desk and desktop support staff
  • Exam-based, so you need to study and pass a test
  • Good for people who like fixing computers and devices

What the Google IT Support Certificate is

The Google IT Support Certificate is an online program designed for beginners. It covers technical support basics, networking, operating systems, system administration and security.

  • Built for people with no IT background
  • Course-based, with a certificate when you finish
  • A friendly way to find out if IT is right for you

Which should you get first?

  • Choose Google IT Support first if you are new to tech and want a gentle, structured introduction.
  • Choose CompTIA A+ first if you already know some basics and want an industry exam on your resume.
  • Do both if you can. Many learners use the Google program as a foundation, then prepare for A+.

Whichever you pick, read real job postings in your area and see which credential employers mention most.

Start with the computer skills every job needs

Before you dive into IT certifications, make sure your everyday office skills are strong. Help desk and support staff use spreadsheets, documents, email and calendars all day, and so do most office jobs.

Our Microsoft Excel & Office Essentials class covers formulas, sorting, filtering, charts, a simple budget, Word documents, resumes and letters, Outlook email and calendar, plus a portfolio spreadsheet project. It is a quick, practical way to build confidence with technology.
