Workplace Violence Prevention Training for California Employers (SB 553)

Quick answer: Most California employers must have a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan and train employees on it every year under SB 553 (Labor Code section 6401.9), in force since July 1, 2024. The Ayangbah Foundation offers a 2-hour live training for $29 per seat, monthly starting January 2027, and can help you write or update your plan.

  • Length: 2 hours
  • Price: $29 per seat; plan-writing service quoted
  • Format: Live in San Bernardino, live online, or onsite
  • Cohorts: Monthly, first cohort January 2027

What SB 553 Requires

  • A written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, on its own or inside your Injury and Illness Prevention Program
  • A violent incident log
  • Identifying and correcting workplace violence hazards
  • Post-incident response and investigation
  • Initial training, then training every year, plus more training when there is a new hazard or plan change

The training must cover your plan and how employees can take part, how to report incidents without fear of retaliation, job-specific hazards and corrective measures, and how to get copies of records. It must also include an interactive question-and-answer session with a person who knows your plan, and it must fit workers' education, literacy and language. Training records must be kept for at least one year, and incident and hazard records for five years.

Some workplaces are exempt, such as certain health care facilities already covered by Cal/OSHA's health care standard, and small workplaces not open to the public with fewer than 10 employees present that follow their IIPP. Cal/OSHA is also working on a general industry standard, so check the latest rules each year.

How Our Training Works

We teach the law, warning signs, de-escalation basics, reporting and your plan. Your plan coordinator can join for the live Q&A, or we can train your coordinator to lead it. For employers without a plan, we can walk your site, start from Cal/OSHA's free model plan, and help you set up the incident log and annual review.

Where and How Classes Meet

Every course is offered in person at 255 N. D Street, Suite #200-XXVII, San Bernardino, CA 92401, or live online from anywhere in the U.S. That makes it easy for learners in Fontana, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto, Colton, Redlands, Riverside, Moreno Valley, Victorville and the rest of the Inland Empire to attend. New cohorts start all year, so there is always a next class.
