The soft skills employers look for most are communication, teamwork, reliability, problem solving and a willingness to learn. You build them the same way you build any skill: practice, feedback and repetition. Our Career Readiness & Entrepreneurship Employment Training class and our free Public Speaking Lab give you a place to do exactly that.
Technical skills get you noticed. Soft skills often decide who gets hired and who gets promoted.
The soft skills that matter most
- Communication: speaking clearly, listening well and writing simple, polite emails.
- Teamwork: helping others, sharing credit and handling disagreement calmly.
- Reliability: showing up on time, keeping your word and finishing what you start.
- Problem solving: noticing an issue, thinking it through and offering a fix.
- Adaptability: learning new tools and staying steady when plans change.
- Professionalism: respectful language, appropriate dress and a positive attitude.
How to build communication and public speaking skills
Communication is the soft skill that shows up in every interview and every workday. The fastest way to improve it is to speak in front of people often, in a low-pressure setting.
- Practice a 60-second introduction about yourself.
- Record yourself answering a common interview question and listen back.
- Join a group where you can speak and get kind, honest feedback.
Our free Public Speaking Lab is a great place to start. It costs nothing and helps you get comfortable talking in front of others. Sign up on /enroll. For more ideas, read our interview tips.
How to build teamwork and reliability
These skills grow through real commitments. Volunteer for a shift, join a group project or take a class with a set schedule. Each time you show up and follow through, you build proof you can talk about in interviews.
Keep a simple log of times you helped a team, met a deadline or solved a problem. Those become your interview stories.
How to show soft skills to employers
Saying "I am a team player" is not enough. Show it with short examples.
- Describe the situation in one sentence.
- Say what you did.
- Share the result, even if it was small.
Our Career Readiness class gives you structured practice with all of this: communication, public speaking, digital skills, financial literacy, job readiness, resume building and mock interviews. You practice soft skills every day in a group setting, which is how they actually stick.
