Job training for single parents works best when the schedule is manageable and support services fill the gaps, like help with child care or transportation. The Ayangbah Foundation's career training meets just 2 hours a day, and it is $0 for WIOA-eligible residents in the San Bernardino area.
Single parents are some of the hardest-working people in the Inland Empire. You juggle school drop-offs, bills, and everything in between. This guide shows how to fit training into that life and what help to ask for.
Why Job Training for Single Parents Looks Different
When you are the main caregiver, a training program has to work around your family, not the other way around. Before you sign up for anything, ask:
- How many hours a day is class, and what time does it meet?
- How many weeks does it last?
- Is it in person or online, and how will I get there?
- What happens if my child is sick and I miss a day?
- Is there any cost, and could I qualify for free training?
Clear answers up front help you plan child care, rides, and work shifts before day one.
It also helps to talk with the people in your support circle before you start. A grandparent, neighbor, friend, or older sibling may be able to cover a pickup or watch the kids for a short time each day. Even a small, steady block of help can make it possible to finish a program. Write down your plan and a backup plan so you are not scrambling on a busy morning.
Support Services to Ask About
Under WIOA, the federal law that funds much of the public workforce system, local areas may offer supportive services to people in training. Depending on where you live and what funding is available, these can include help with things like:
- Child care
- Transportation
- Work clothing or tools
- Other needs that keep you from finishing training
These services vary and are not guaranteed, so confirm what is available with the East Valley America's Job Center of California at 500 Inland Center Dr, San Bernardino, (909) 382-0440 (confirm current hours at workforce.sbcounty.gov). You can also ask about other family programs, such as CalWORKs, through the San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance Department. You can also visit our student services page to see how we support learners.
A Training Schedule Built for Busy Days
The Career Readiness & Entrepreneurship Employment Training is a certificate program in downtown San Bernardino. It is 40 hours over 4 weeks, in person, Monday through Friday for 2 hours a day. A short daily block can be easier to fit around school hours than a full-day program.
You will learn leadership, digital marketing, grants and financial literacy, and business development. Every student takes a career assessment and builds a personal 30/60/90-day plan, which helps you set goals that work for your whole household. The next cohort starts in November 2026. Check the class schedule for times.
Tips for Succeeding as a Parent in Training

If you dream of running your own business, the Entrepreneurship & Small Business workshops can help you explore flexible ways to earn.
