What to Expect on Your First Day of Career Training

On your first day of career training classes in San Bernardino, expect to meet your classmates, learn how the program works, and start setting your goals. It is normal to feel a little nervous, and a bit of preparation goes a long way.

Starting something new takes courage, especially if it has been a while since you were in a classroom. This guide walks you through what day one is usually like at The Ayangbah Foundation and how to get ready.

Before Day One: How You Get Here

By your first class, you will already have taken a few steps:

  1. Applied online
  2. Completed an intake and WIOA eligibility check, with help registering in CalJOBS
  3. Taken a career assessment

The next step is to start class. Your career assessment gives you and your instructors a starting point, so the training can connect to your interests and goals.

What Career Training Classes in San Bernardino Look Like

The Career Readiness & Entrepreneurship Employment Training is a certificate program held in person in downtown San Bernardino. It is 40 hours over 4 weeks, Monday through Friday for 2 hours a day. Over the course, you will cover:

  • Leadership
  • Digital marketing
  • Grants and financial literacy
  • Business development

You will also build a personal 30/60/90-day plan. That plan maps out what you want to do in the first month, second month, and third month after training. The next cohort starts in November 2026. See the class schedule for details.

What Usually Happens on the First Day

Every class is a little different, but first days often include:

  • A welcome and introductions
  • An overview of the schedule and what you will learn
  • Class expectations, like attendance and participation
  • Time to talk about your goals
  • A chance to ask questions

You do not need to know everything on day one. Remember, no prior experience or diploma is required. Everyone in the room is there to learn.

What to Bring

Check any instructions you received during intake. In general, it helps to bring:

  • A notebook and pen
  • A photo ID, in case it is needed
  • Water and a small snack
  • Your phone or a list of important contacts
  • A short list of your career goals and questions

Plan your trip ahead of time, whether you drive, ride the bus, or get dropped off. Arriving a few minutes early helps you settle in.

The night before, get some rest and set an alarm. If you have kids or other people who count on you, confirm your child care or rides ahead of time. Dress in something clean and comfortable. You do not need fancy clothes, but looking ready can help you feel ready. Most of all, come with an open mind. The first day is about getting started, not being perfect.

How to Make the Most of Training

  • Show up every day. Short daily classes build on each other.
  • Speak up when you have a question. Others may have the same one.
  • Get to know your classmates. They can become part of your network.
  • Use the student services page if you need support.
  • Think about next steps, like the Public Speaking & Communication Lab for interview practice.

People often ask which course is best to get a job immediately. A short program with a clear plan, like this one, can help you move forward quickly while you build skills for the long run.
